Rob Lowe faced significant competition for major film roles in the 1980s and ’90s. Among his competitors, Tom Cruise frequently stood in his way. Lowe described Cruise as a “nemesis,” especially when it came to blockbuster roles.
In an interview with the New York Post, Lowe recalled reading scripts for films like “Jerry Maguire” and “Top Gun” and being informed that Cruise had secured the roles instead. He recognized “Top Gun” as a film that would be hugely successful, but Cruise was already attached to the project.
That dastardly Tom Cruise was always a nemesis,
Lowe explained, reflecting on the missed opportunities for roles he believed would be significant in his career.
Despite these setbacks, Lowe found success as a prominent member of the Brat Pack, starring in influential films such as “St. Elmo’s Fire,” “The Outsiders,” “Class,” and “Oxford Blues.” These films helped solidify his status as an iconic figure of that era.
However, Lowe missed out on a chance to work with director John Hughes in movies that have become classics. He revealed he was never considered for a role in Hughes’ “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” a fact he regrets.
No, that’s a big regret,
Lowe admitted. He explained that Hughes was not interested in casting him, partly because Lowe was already quite well-known, while Hughes preferred casting lesser-known actors to help them rise in fame.
Lowe noted, I met with John once, and it’s not like he didn’t have a lot of parts I could have done.
His lack of collaboration with Hughes remains one of Lowe’s regrets from that era.
Looking back, Lowe speculates, I think I was actually already too well known.
Hughes sought to make his cast famous rather than cast those who were already in the public eye.
Though he missed out on some roles, Rob Lowe crafted a resilient career. He starred as Sam Seaborn on “The West Wing,” earning critical acclaim, including Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. Later, he showcased his comedic talent as Chris Traeger on “Parks and Recreation.” His impressive career also spans film and streaming projects.
