In 2017, I met Charlie Kirk in a Los Angeles hotel lobby. After several emails and a bit of persistence, we arranged a meeting. Charlie, known as an energetic new figure in conservative circles, had set his sights on college campuses. Standing at 6’5″, his presence was commanding. His eyes constantly scanned the room while maintaining a focused conversation, a skill I admired.
Charlie wasn’t one to waste time. His focus was on getting to the core of issues. He wore an oversized suit and clunky dress shoes, reflecting his disregard for fashion trends. Despite his youth, his sincerity and determination were apparent. After our meeting, I knew working together was the right choice. Our partnership would flourish over the following years.
In 2019, Charlie and I launched “The Charlie Kirk Show.” Initially a weekly podcast, it quickly evolved. During the COVID-19 pandemic, it became a daily program and later a nationally syndicated radio and TV show. Charlie’s ability to expand the show demonstrated his extraordinary drive.
Blake Neff, a producer and co-host, described Charlie as uniquely high-agency. He possessed not just intentions, but the rare ability to follow through. Over the past year, many tributes have celebrated Charlie’s achievements. However, the odds he faced on his journey were often overlooked.
At 18, Charlie founded Turning Point USA (TPUSA) with no resources other than his determination. He wanted to motivate young people and created TPUSA Faith and TPUSA Action to engage others. For five years, Charlie built TPUSA without a salary, relying on speaking fees and friends’ generosity for support. He wore many hats within the organization, often handling financial challenges while constantly on the road.
Charlie’s relentless schedule took a toll, leading to chronic back pain. Despite this, he continued his rigorous speaking engagements, delivering notable speeches under immense physical discomfort. Early criticism of Charlie pointed to his confrontational approach. Yet each challenge only fueled his resolve.
In response to political setbacks and unfounded blame, including accusations related to the 2020 election, Charlie persevered. Following Kari Lake’s narrow gubernatorial loss in Arizona, he launched a voter outreach platform, transforming Arizona’s performance in 2024. His ability to adapt was remarkable.
Charlie worked tirelessly on college campuses, addressing political misconceptions. His “Prove Me Wrong” events attracted growing audiences and reached billions online by 2024, shifting perceptions of conservatism. He played a significant role in the 2024 presidential election gains among young voters.
Critics missed the dedication driving Charlie’s mission. He built a formidable network to counteract longstanding trends. Despite constant obstacles, Charlie remained optimistic. His commitment to his cause and unwavering faith in America were constants.
As we remember Charlie Kirk, we note his unmatched dedication and legacy. His journey was not assured but marked by persistence. Following Charlie’s example, we face our challenges with determination, echoing his mantra: Never surrender.
