Many Homeowners Rush Mortgage Payments Despite Low Interest Rates

Homeowners with Low Rates Speed Up Mortgage Payments

Despite holding mortgages at attractive interest rates, many homeowners are opting to accelerate their loan payments. This trend contradicts the typical financial advice of maintaining low-rate debts to utilize funds elsewhere.

“Financially speaking, if I have a 2.5 percent mortgage, I would rather pay them as slowly and as long as I can,” says financial planner Christopher Price.

Recent statistics from Rocket Mortgage reveal that almost 25% of homeowners repay their mortgages faster than required. This study encompassed data from nearly 3 million loans nationwide over the previous five years.

The trend highlights a disconnect, as those who would gain the most from expedited payments are not usually the ones pursuing this strategy. Homeowners with low interest rates often choose to allocate resources toward more profitable investments instead of hastening mortgage payments.
