Basketball fans eager to see Caitlin Clark’s senior international debut with Team USA at the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup had to wait briefly before witnessing her on the court. Clark did not start in Coach Kara Lawson’s lineup against China, a team the USA faced in the 2022 gold-medal game.
The initial lineup featured Chelsea Gray and Jackie Young as guards, alongside Breanna Stewart, Kahleah Copper, and Napheesa Collier. Gray was crucial in securing the 2022 victory, whereas Young, despite her prowess in the WNBA, was not part of the previous squad.
Clark entered the game halfway through the first quarter as Team USA began pulling ahead. Young notably contributed with seven of the team’s initial 20 points.
Clark concluded the quarter scoring with a layup, distributing four assists, and grabbing a rebound. Prior to the tournament, Lawson commended Clark’s dedication and skill, describing her as competitive and anticipatory in her gameplay.
In August, Clark was in exceptional form, breaking numerous WNBA records. She averaged or assisted on 44.7 points per game, setting a record for a single month. Clark distinguished herself by achieving consecutive games with over 30 points and 10 assists—a first in WNBA history.
During the last games before the international break, Clark scored 34 points with 12 assists in a win over the Connecticut Sun. She then scored 37 points, with eight three-pointers and 10 assists, against the Chicago Sky.
Throughout August, Clark consistently produced high-scoring, high-assist games. Five such performances with at least 20 points and 10 assists underscored her remarkable ability. Her average of 24.4 points per game marked the highest-scoring month achieved by a point guard in WNBA history.
Though Lawson opted for a lineup of seasoned players to initiate the tournament, Clark’s talent could soon secure her a starting position. Other notable players joining from the bench included Angel Reese and Paige Bueckers.
