Louisiana State University (LSU) planned to sign tight end Dae’Quan Wright on Sunday. Wright spent this summer with the Cleveland Browns.
The decision stirred controversy for two main reasons. Wright returned to college after a stint in the NFL. He also played for LSU’s new head coach, Lane Kiffin, at Ole Miss last season. The SEC has rules against athletes transferring within the conference unless they use the spring transfer portal window.

LSU argues that Wright is not transferring directly from Ole Miss, but from the Browns.
On Monday, LSU expanded its roster with former Ole Miss players who were in the NFL. According to Hayes Fawcett of Rivals, defensive lineman Zxavian Harris will join the Tigers. Harris, who recorded 58 tackles and three sacks last season with the Rebels, was waived by the New Orleans Saints on August 8.
Rival SEC schools want the conference to penalize LSU for circumventing the transfer rules. LSU plans to defend the inclusion of Wright on their roster this fall. In addition to Wright, they have also acquired Harris.
Earlier this month, Lane Kiffin advocated for players with a fifth year of eligibility. He stated these players should choose their programs freely.
These kids, if they get a fifth year, they should be able to go wherever they want,
Kiffin remarked. Any conference. Anywhere. Because they didn’t have a chance. And there’s going to be places that don’t want them back because they’re full or don’t need that position or have new coaches. It would be a shame to limit these kids, NCAA or conferences.
LSU challenges the SEC’s rules this summer. With the new signings, they are prepared for a confrontation.
