Fever Coach Stephanie White Breaks Silence Amid Criticism

During a recent game, DiJonai Carrington of the Chicago Sky committed a flagrant foul against Sophie Cunningham of the Indiana Fever. The incident drew significant media attention, but Fever coach Stephanie White initially remained silent.

Many pundits criticized Cunningham, while White refrained from making immediate public comments. This quiet response mirrored her past handling of similar situations involving players like Caitlin Clark, who had faced physical hits and criticism in the media.

White eventually addressed the matter during a press conference, before a game against the New York Liberty. She emphasized her commitment to her players’ well-being and safety, dismissing any narratives suggesting otherwise. White stated, “This isn’t for those in the room, but for those online creating false narratives. Player success and safety are top priorities for me.”

“The play was called correctly…Thankfully, Sophie is okay,” White noted. “Was it egregious? Absolutely.”

White explained that she hadn’t seen the foul in real time due to attending a press conference immediately after the game. This clarified her Saturday night silence but not the aftermath.

When questioned about Caitlin Clark’s treatment in the WNBA, White defended her record of supporting players. She expressed frustration that critics doubted her dedication to her team, stating, “I ride with them 10 toes down all the time.” However, some viewed her silence as a lack of immediate support for Cunningham.

White also discussed broader issues, condemning “hate, fear-mongering, and divisiveness,” asserting that these negative forces would not prevail. She affirmed, “We are united. We are connected. Love, grace, humility, and kindness will win.” Her stance did not alleviate concerns about her delayed response to the incident.

After her public statements, Fever president Kelly Krauskopf issued a statement supporting White. She praised White’s leadership and her ability to keep the team focused on achieving a playoff position, despite intense scrutiny.

This backing from leadership did not fully address the criticisms. Cunningham, having suffered the foul and the subsequent backlash, appeared neglected until White publicly condemned Carrington’s actions.
