49ers Prepare for Historic Australia NFL Debut Against Rams

The San Francisco 49ers are set to make history by playing the first-ever NFL game in Australia. They will face the Los Angeles Rams to kick off the 2026 season. Fans have reason to be hopeful about the matchup next week, as key players George Kittle and Nick Bosa are part of the traveling squad, according to various reports.

George Kittle, the tight end for the 49ers, was seen on the field before a preseason game against the Tennessee Titans on August 13, 2026, at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. Despite injuries, both Kittle and Bosa’s presence adds optimism for the team’s performance down under. Kittle has been recovering from a torn Achilles suffered during the Wild Card Round on January 11 against the Philadelphia Eagles. Bosa faced an ACL tear in Week 3 last season and has been battling tendinitis throughout training camp.

Injuries have plagued the 49ers during training camp, affecting depth. Players like new wide receiver Mike Evans and fullback Kyle Juszczyk have also been dealing with injuries. Additionally, wide receiver Ricky Pearsall suffered a PCL injury. However, Kittle and Bosa’s participation in the journey to Australia suggests potential recovery and reinforcement as the regular season begins.

“I would assume so,” Kittle commented last month regarding his travel to Australia hinting at his play availability. “I mean, that probably makes the most sense. I would assume.”

Having practiced on Wednesday, the 49ers departed for Australia, expecting to arrive on Friday. With the 17-hour time difference, the team is adjusting before facing the Rams on September 10 at 8:35 p.m. ET. Locally, the game will start on Friday morning at 10:35 a.m. at Melbourne Cricket Ground. Bosa was seen working out during training camp at the SAP Performance Facility in Santa Clara, California on July 27, 2026.

As game day approaches, the availability of Kittle, Bosa, and other 49ers players will be more apparent through their practices. The team is considered a Super Bowl favorite this season, with the Rams opposing MVP quarterback Matthew Stafford. Aaron Donald’s unexpected return from retirement to join Myles Garrett on the defensive line adds intrigue, following his trade from the Cleveland Browns.
