Gio Reyna, a standout player for the U.S. men’s soccer team, celebrated a significant 4-1 victory with more than a goal. He revealed his wife’s pregnancy during the celebration of his impressive goal.
Reyna, 23, scored in the 98th minute with a trivela, a technique where the goal is scored using the outside of the foot. After scoring, he made his announcement known by first covering his ears, then celebrating with his teammates. He then picked up the ball, tucked it under his shirt, and sucked his thumb, a gesture commonly used by soccer players to indicate an upcoming addition to the family.
“My wife’s pregnant,” Reyna confirmed after the game, as reported by The Athletic. He added, “I’ve known for a couple of months now. I was waiting for the perfect time, and this felt like it.” The celebration marked the first public announcement.
His parents, Claudio and Danielle, both former U.S. international players, alongside his wife Chloe, had encouraged him to shoot more frequently and be more assertive on the field. This advice seemed to pay off with his goal rounding off a successful start for the U.S. team in the World Cup.
Reyna remarked that his decision to use the trivela technique arose naturally. “These questions are always hard for me,” he said. “Honestly, when I’m playing, I’m not really thinking. I’m just doing whatever felt natural. I was in a good area, and I got a good pass, and I just saw the angle.”
U.S. head coach Mauricio Pochettino was equally ecstatic, joining Reyna on the field to celebrate the goal.
The U.S. squad aims to continue their winning momentum with an upcoming match against Australia next Friday at 3 p.m. ET.
