The couple described living through a lengthy seven-week manhunt for Bryan Kohberger, charged with the November 13, 2022, murders of Kaylee, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin. Kohberger’s DNA was found on a knife sheath at the crime scene.

Kaylee’s parents are working to assist cold cases through their foundation while they fight for justice. They disclosed that Kohberger, initially pleading guilty to avoid the death penalty, is now seeking to withdraw his guilty plea. His current sentences are four life terms without parole and an additional ten years for burglary.

Kristi Goncalves struggles with forgiveness, saying that since Kohberger hasn’t shown remorse, forgiving him seems impossible. She described him as “demonic” and “soulless.” This perception intensified after observing Kohberger in court.

Steve Goncalves noted the brutality of the crimes, referring to them as Kohberger’s “sick fantasy.” Both parents queried how one could forgive such heinous acts.

Kristi mentioned her frequent conversations with God about forgiveness and her conflict over the premeditated nature of the crimes, questioning if she should forgive a “demon” or the “devil.”
