American eating habits are changing rapidly as more people seek high-protein options, especially at breakfast. Major fast-food chains are adjusting their menu to accommodate the growing demand for functional nutrition. Experts have weighed in on why this shift is significant.
The Importance of Protein at Breakfast
Nutrition experts agree that consuming protein in the morning can stabilize blood sugar levels, reduce cravings, and support muscle maintenance. Protein-rich breakfasts are increasingly seen as more effective for weight management and appetite regulation compared to carbohydrate-heavy meals.
Tanya Freirich, a registered dietitian in Charlotte, North Carolina, stresses the importance of consistently consuming protein throughout the day. “Protein in meals helps stabilize blood sugar after eating, and is essential for muscle maintenance, repair, and growth,” she says.
Freirich suggests treating fast-food options as occasional treats. She advises consumers to complement high-fat breakfast meals with fiber-rich fruits, vegetables, and whole grains during the day.
Fast-Food Chains Embrace the Protein Trend
Responding to this dietary shift, fast-food chains have been reimagining classic breakfast offerings. Chick-fil-A has tapped into this trend, adapting the Southern tradition of chicken and waffles into a high-protein breakfast option.
“Our guests want meals that are higher in protein without sacrificing flavor,” says Allison Duncan, director of menu & packaging at Chick-fil-A. The new Chicken & Waffles Breakfast Sandwich reflects this demand, providing a protein-rich option for morning commuters.
Over recent years, competitors have also expanded their morning menus with egg bites, yogurt parfaits, and customizable meat options. Restaurants aim to meet the demand for breakfasts with higher protein counts.
Quality Over Quantity
Health professionals warn that the quality and source of protein are as crucial as the amount consumed. According to Freirich, there’s a notable difference between protein sources. An omelet with vegetables might have equivalent grams of protein compared to a chicken and waffles sandwich, yet the latter could be higher in saturated fats and calories.
She cautions against processed fast-food proteins, noting that they can cause more lethargy than energy. “These proteins are less healthy for our heart and take longer to digest,” explains Freirich.
Moderation is Key
For fast-food enthusiasts, Freirich advocates moderation. “If you love chicken and waffles, it can be enjoyed once in a while,” she notes. A balanced day should include plenty of vegetables, fruits, and fiber.
While adding more protein could be beneficial, Freirich emphasizes the importance of a balanced diet that incorporates vegetables, fruits, beans, and whole grains.
