Costa Cruises has recently taken steps to address buffet food management on their ships. They have warned guests against bringing buffet food back to their cabins, threatening a €60 cleaning fee. This would amount to nearly $70.
The cruise line, a subsidiary of Carnival Corporation, emphasizes that the safety and well-being of guests are paramount. A spokesperson from Costa Cruises mentioned, “On a limited number of specific sailings, onboard communication was shared as a preventive and deterrent measure. This aligns with our existing policies to encourage guests to behave responsibly.”
Crew Center reported that the policy indicates that only trained room service staff are allowed to transport food to cabins. “All food must be consumed exclusively in designated dining areas,” noted the cruise blog. This approach aims to maintain high sanitation standards and ensure a pleasant experience for all guests.
Based in Genoa, Italy, Costa Cruises offers trips through the Mediterranean, Caribbean, and South America. The policy has sparked a range of online reactions after being discussed by the unrealcruises Instagram account.
One online commenter supported the rule, saying they disliked seeing plates and cups in hallways. They suggested that diners should either return items or eat in designated areas. Another user added, “I mean try to have some class.”
However, not everyone agrees with the policy. A different commenter argued they wouldn’t pay the fine, noting, “Make breakfast in bed for my wife every morning by bringing food back. Who cares where you eat the included food.”
Despite the debate, Costa Cruises continues to prioritize guest safety and maintain their onboard dining policies, aiming to balance guest enjoyment with hygiene and quality standards.
