The Washington Commanders face a significant setback with the loss of left tackle Laremy Tunsil due to injury. Head coach Dan Quinn announced that Tunsil requires surgery to repair his torn triceps, sidelining him indefinitely. This development removes a vital component from the Commanders’ offense.
“It’s always tough to talk about a player missing time, and especially a great player like LT,” Quinn expressed. “He is an absolutely fantastic teammate, and he’ll be missed. We certainly can’t wait to get him back.”
Tunsil was injured on Saturday during an individual drill involving Seahawks pass rusher Odafe Oweh. He was quickly ushered into the facility after discussing the injury with the training staff.
The Commanders had recently made Tunsil the NFL’s highest-paid tackle, offering a lucrative two-year contract extension worth $60.2 million in March. This deal set a record for lineman salaries, with Tunsil earning $30 million annually.
His career began with the Miami Dolphins, who drafted him 13th overall. After three seasons in Miami, Tunsil played six seasons with the Houston Texans before the Commanders acquired him last season. He participated in 14 games for Washington.
Despite the setback, Quinn praised Tunsil’s performance, stating, “He is really on the top of his game right now. Both in the run and pass, this is an equally strong player, and so it’s a big deal.”
With Tunsil unavailable, the Commanders will rely on Brandon Coleman to step into the left tackle role. Coleman successfully started 12 games as a rookie in 2024 and made three starts last year. Quinn emphasized the team’s confidence in Coleman, citing his strong offseason preparation.
“He’s played a lot of winning football at left tackle here, and we know that he’s ready for it,” Quinn noted. “He’s put in an excellent offseason, and the team is very confident in him.”
The current plan includes veteran Andrew Wylie maintaining his position as a backup swing tackle. General manager Adam Peters and Quinn do not intend to pursue free agent options at this time.
