Erica Schwartz, nominated by President Trump to lead the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), recently faced scrutiny during her Senate hearing. Concerns about her independence arose as she hesitated to commit to standing up to Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
Democrats and GOP committee chairman Bill Cassidy expressed frustration at Schwartz’s reluctance to assure them that she would prevent political interference within the agency. Susan Monarez, Schwartz’s predecessor, had been dismissed after opposing Kennedy’s vaccine agenda.
Despite pledging ‘radical transparency’ and promising not to betray science, Schwartz did not specify how she would respond if Kennedy directed her to actions unsupported by science. She stated, ‘The secretary absolutely will allow me to be the CDC director,’ implying confidence in her role.
Senator Tim Kaine noted similarities to Monarez’s previous confirmation hearing responses, which led to his vote against her. Senator Maggie Hassan questioned if Schwartz would halt a flu vaccine campaign under HHS orders during a deadly epidemic, mentioning Kennedy’s prior real orders.
While Schwartz dismissed claims vaccines cause autism and noted a lack of evidence, she refrained from committing to remove language on the CDC website linking vaccines to autism. Bill Cassidy emphasized the need for a CDC director who resists undermining immunization, remarking, ‘You can be CDC director and just take orders.’
Shaughnessy Naughton, president of 314 Action, criticized Schwartz’s hearing performance as disappointing and disqualifying due to her failure to prioritize public health over politics.
In other health policy news, Sean Kaufman, another nominee, joined Schwartz in indicating reluctance to differentiate from the administration, causing concern among legislators.
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche pledged to stop mail distribution of abortion medication, specifically mifepristone, aligning with Trump administration opposition to Biden-era policies.
Furthermore, nearly 7,000 cases of cyclosporiasis, a parasitic illness, have emerged, with 1,645 lab-confirmed domestically and the CDC investigating an additional 5,100 cases.
