Xavier Becerra Advances in California Governor Race

Xavier Becerra, once considered an unlikely contender in the California governor campaign, has successfully secured a top-two finish in the state’s primary election. As determined by The Associated Press, Becerra will now advance to the November election. His surprising surge in the race was propelled by the unexpected departure of Eric Swalwell, opening a pathway for this experienced Democrat.

The race has been particularly close, with Steve Hilton, a Republican and former Fox News host, and Tom Steyer, a Democrat and former hedge fund manager, vying for the second spot. Given California’s nonpartisan primary system, the top two finishers proceed to the general election, regardless of party affiliations.

Becerra’s performance in the primary highlights his remarkable come-from-behind victory. If successful in November, he would become California’s first Latino governor in the modern era. Voter interviews reveal a preference for Becerra’s extensive government experience, setting him apart from a broad field of less seasoned candidates.

Initial returns showed Hilton in the lead. His advantage was partly due to early Republican turnout. Conversely, many Democrats reportedly delayed voting, wanting to observe the race’s progression before making their decision. The race took a definitive turn on Friday when Becerra surpassed Hilton in the returns.

The competition remains unresolved as Hilton struggles to defend his position against Steyer, who has been gaining momentum since Election Day. However, he risks staying stuck in third place.

Should Becerra face Hilton in November, he would have a strong advantage. Hilton’s campaign faces significant hurdles, notably due to his endorsement from President Trump, whose popularity is low in California. No Republican has won a statewide office there since 2006.
