The Mount Sinai Health System has received a subpoena from a grand jury requesting information on adolescent patients who have received gender-related care. This was confirmed by a hospital spokeswoman on Friday.
This makes Mount Sinai the second hospital in Manhattan to disclose that it is under federal investigation for its gender-transition treatments for minors. The Trump administration has opposed these treatments, arguing that they cause harm to impressionable and vulnerable children.
Last month, NYU Langone, another hospital system, revealed that it had also received a subpoena. This subpoena required information to identify each patient under 18 who had received gender-related treatments since 2020. Both subpoenas originated from the United States District Court for the Northern District of Texas, according to the hospitals.
A spokeswoman for Mount Sinai, Lucia Lee, stated, “We are committed to safeguarding our patients’ privacy.” Her statement did not clarify if the hospital would challenge the subpoena. She added, “If we are ultimately required to produce records, our current plan is to provide only de-identified information, with all patient-identifying details removed.”
The hospital also informed that New York law mandates it to notify affected patients if the records are ultimately produced.
