37 Suspected Migrants Rescued Off Southern California

Dozens of suspected migrants were rescued from a 30-foot vessel stranded off the Southern California coast, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard reported that 37 individuals were aboard the boat when crews located the vessel nearly 90 miles from Channel Islands Harbor last Friday.

The rescue effort commenced at approximately 3:40 p.m. when the boat’s operator called the Coast Guard for assistance.

“The operator indicated the boat had gone two days without fuel, food, or water, lacking essential safety equipment,” stated the Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard deployed multiple units, including cutters Sockeye and Halibut, boats from Los Angeles-Long Beach and Channel Islands stations, and an air crew.

Crews discovered the boat around 8:30 p.m. and transferred all 37 individuals onto the Sockeye, about 90 miles off the coast.

Master Chief Peter Nelson, the officer in charge of the Sockeye, praised the efforts of the Coast Guard teams involved in the operation.

“I could not be prouder of the Coast Guard crews on scene who were directly responsible for 37 lives saved,” he remarked.

“Despite challenging conditions, they completed the rescue with extraordinary professionalism and judgment,” Nelson continued.

Once rescued, the individuals were brought to Coast Guard Base Los Angeles-Long Beach and subsequently handed over to U.S. Border Patrol agents.

No details were released about the origins, destination, or starting point of the boat’s journey.
