Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin announced the success of Operation Rotten Apple. This federal initiative led to thousands of arrests in New York, focusing on individuals deemed risks to public safety.
Criticism of New York Leadership
During the press conference, Mullin criticized New York’s leadership. He specifically called out Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul and Mayor Zohran Mamdani of New York City. According to Mullin, these leaders hindered law enforcement efforts. He cited Mayor Mamdani’s attempt to slash the NYPD budget by $22 million and a refusal to cooperate with federal authorities.
“Operation Rotten Apple was initiated because New York City has a liberal, socialist mayor,” Mullin stated. “Over the last 30 days, we have removed over 2,100 of the worst criminals from our streets statewide.”
Significant Arrests
Mullin highlighted several arrests involving foreign nationals with violent criminal records. One case involved a 39-year-old Indian national wanted for alleged rape in Germany. Another arrest was of a 50-year-old Ukrainian citizen convicted of serious crimes including murder.
These individuals, according to Mullin, were active in New York due to sanctuary policies that prevent cooperation with federal immigration enforcement.
Mullin’s Stance on Sanctuary Policies
Mullin criticized New York politicians for releasing over 13,000 illegal immigrants and obstructing DHS and ICE efforts. He also addressed the city’s lack of cooperation with federal programs like the 287(g) agreement, which aids local police in working with federal agents.
Hochul remains defiant even after sheriffs sued over laws banning cooperation with ICE. “Seven of the safest cities work with ICE and the 287(g) program,” Mullin pointed out.
Federal Response
Mullin announced federal readiness to deploy more agents to enforce law and immigration standards, even without local cooperation.
“Local leadership refuses to cooperate,” Mullin said. “We will send as many personnel as necessary to restore law and order.”
Mullin conveyed President Trump’s commitment to enhancing New York’s safety through collaboration with DHS and ICE.
