The world’s largest soccer tournament, the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup, has arrived in North America. Soccer fans are abuzz as matches and opening ceremonies unfold. From Mexico City to New York to Toronto, spectators gather to witness 48 national teams compete. This year marks the first tournament with a 48-team format, up from 32 teams used since 1998. It’s also unique as three nations – the U.S., Mexico, and Canada – host the tournament together for the first time.
Opening Ceremonies Across Three Nations
With matches in 11 cities across the U.S., Mexico, and Canada, fans are thrilled with three opening ceremonies. On Thursday, Mexico plays South Africa at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, with Shakira and Burna Boy performing the official song “Dai Dai” at 11:30 a.m. local time. The FIFA World Cup’s first album features various artists including Alejandro Fernández and J Balvin.
In Toronto, Canada welcomes Bosnia and Herzegovina on Friday at the expanded BMO Field. The venue increased from 28,000 to 45,000 seats. Alanis Morissette, Alessia Cara, and Michael Bublé headline the opening ceremony at 1:30 p.m. ET.
The United States hosts an opening ceremony on Friday in Los Angeles, where the U.S. Men’s National Team faces Paraguay. Performers include Katy Perry, Future, and Anitta, starting at 4:30 p.m. local time.
Exciting Group Matches Await
Following the opening ceremony on June 11, Group A’s Mexico and South Africa match will take place at 2 p.m. local time. It’s a rematch from the 2010 World Cup where they tied 1-1. South Korea and Czechia will play another Group A match in Zapopan, Mexico.
On Friday, Canada faces Bosnia and Herzegovina in the first Group B match. The U.S. competes against Paraguay in Los Angeles later that day. The U.S. teams wear new kits inspired by historical jerseys, according to Nike.
Enhanced Security Measures in Place
The FBI has mobilized tactical teams in several U.S. cities to manage security, safeguarding players, fans, and visitors during the event. Fans attending matches at Gillette Stadium should arrive early to navigate security. ICE will focus on national security, not immigration enforcement, amid stricter U.S. entry policies.
A Somali referee was barred from entering the U.S. due to vetting concerns. This highlights ongoing security measures for the tournament.
Stadium Rules and Fan Excitement
According to FIFA, nontransparent bags, hazardous items, and reusable water bottles are prohibited at stadiums. Due to high temperatures, FIFA amended its rules to allow one factory-sealed water bottle per spectator. Beverages sold at stadiums are supplied by Coca-Cola.
Ticket prices have increased significantly, reaching hundreds and even thousands of dollars for some matches. Fans still demonstrate enthusiasm, prepared to cheer loudly even from less desirable seats.
Teams to Watch and Betting Interests
Bettors are excited about the tournament, especially with favorites to advance from the group stages. German economist Joachim Klement predicts the Netherlands to excel due to consistent performance and strong defense. The U.S. team may perform well in Group D, but soccer’s popularity in the country remains a challenge.
Despite soccer’s ranking in the U.S., Americans are expected to wager $3.1 billion on the World Cup through online bets. This shows a growth in interest from $1.8 billion in 2022.
