The excitement surrounding the reunion of Oasis was palpable in Britain last year. The band, separated for sixteen years, reformed to play a series of well-received shows in the United Kingdom. There was widespread chatter about their tour, though the Gallagher brothers remained notably silent. They avoided interviews, likely preparing for a documentary on their reunion, save for Noel Gallagher’s appearance on Talksport radio. He spoke there about Manchester City’s commanding 4-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers. The only statements concerning Oasis’s reunion intertwined with Noel’s comments on Manchester City.
“I was amazed at how good and fluid it looked,” Noel remarked. He praised new players such as Tijjani Reijnders and Oscar Bobb, highlighting their initial performances. However, initial impressions can be misleading. Reijnders was transferred to Al Qadsiah after a disappointing season, Bobb moved to Fulham mid-season, and goalkeeper James Trafford lost his starting position. Manchester City eventually faltered, and Pep Guardiola departed after a decade. These developments underline how initial perceptions can often mislead.

From this, several other anecdotes from previous seasons arise:
2025-26
Tottenham Hotspur impressed with a 3-0 victory over Burnley, their season just beginning under Thomas Frank. Positive performances followed, such as against Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup. However, Frank was sacked by the season’s end, and Tottenham narrowly avoided relegation. Despite seemingly promising starts, their supporters remained unconvinced.
Brentford, under new management with Keith Andrews, initially seemed troubled, losing 3-1 to Nottingham Forest. Dan Ndoye shone in that match but scored only one league goal that season. Yet, Brentford ended up contending for European places, with striker Igor Thiago finishing near the top of the goalscoring chart.
Not every prediction was flawed. Arsenal claimed a tight victory over Manchester United, while Liverpool’s 4-2 win against Bournemouth exposed defensive vulnerabilities.
2024-25
Manchester United thought they found their new striker in Joshua Zirkzee, who scored the winning goal in a 1-0 victory over Fulham. Unfortunately, Zirkzee only scored again in one other match that season. Despite the initial optimism, two years later, it’s surprising he remains with the club.
Bright beginnings for Manchester City, beating Chelsea 2-0, indicated adaptability. However, Rodri’s season-ending injury swiftly challenged this. Guardiola endured his worst period as manager with City struggling in his absence.
2023-24
Aston Villa suffered a heavy 5-1 defeat against Newcastle, putting their Champions League aspirations in doubt. But Sir Alex Ferguson believed in their potential, stating they played impressive football despite unfortunate results. Aston Villa indeed surprised by finishing fourth, marking their best result since 1996.
2022-23
The reaction to Manchester United’s 2-1 home loss to Brighton, triggered by two goals from Pascal Gross, was one of concern. It seemed Erik ten Hag’s tenure began without progress, with criticisms of Lisandro Martinez’s height and benching Cristiano Ronaldo. Defender Harry Maguire found the defeat a significant disappointment.
Nevertheless, the season turned positive for United. They finished third and reached both domestic cup finals, clinching the Carabao Cup. Ten Hag eventually left, but his decisions, including standing by Martinez, contributed to a successful season.
2021-22
Manchester United began with enthusiasm, overwhelming Leeds 5-1, assisted by Paul Pogba’s record-breaking four assists. Despite initial promise, United slumped, and Pogba’s further contributions were limited.
Manchester City also started poorly, losing 1-0 to Tottenham. Though they went on to win the league, the result was initially celebrated as positive for Tottenham under Nuno Espirito Santo. Espirito Santo earned recognition early but soon departed after poor results.
Japhet Tanganga starred in a defensive role against City, receiving praise for his tenacity. However, following suspension and injuries, his presence dwindled.
