Aida Burkins, a 22-year-old mother from Hemet, California, faced an unforeseen health crisis that began with a routine trip to Chicago. Before this event, her life revolved around her two young children, aged 1 and 3. However, a series of perplexing symptoms led her on a nine-month journey seeking answers.
In May 2025, her troubles began when her ear failed to adjust after flying to Chicago. Upon returning home, she experienced alarming symptoms including bleeding from her throat, worsening hearing loss, fatigue, and weight loss. Despite seeking medical advice, initial diagnoses attributed her symptoms to altitude sickness—a condition expected to resolve in time, but it did not.
Further investigations revealed a critical underlying issue. A mass obstructing her Eustachian tube prompted a referral to an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist. Months passed, and her hearing continued to decline with persistent muffled sounds and ringing sensations in her ears. During her ENT visit, inflamed and enlarged adenoids were noted alongside a suspicious mass, unlikely to be cancer due to her young age.
With persistent concerns, Aida underwent a biopsy, followed by a second one, due to a swollen left throat affecting her jawline. The doctor, confounded by her case, raised suspicions of cancer following CT scans that revealed numerous abnormalities in her lymph nodes.
February 2026 brought the diagnosis: nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), a rare head and neck cancer typically found in the upper throat, behind the nose. NPC symptoms often include nasal congestion, nosebleeds, hearing difficulties, and swollen neck lymph nodes. It is associated with the Epstein-Barr virus, genetic factors, and certain environments, though uncommon in the U.S., striking fewer than one in 100,000 annually.
Determined to combat the disease, Aida embarked on chemotherapy and radiation therapy, receiving positive indications of tumor shrinkage. Her doctors hold an optimistic outlook for a cancer-free future.
Aida’s story aims to alert others to potential cancer symptoms, emphasizing its indiscrimination regardless of age. Her children remain her inspiration, providing the strength to navigate treatment and aspire to a life witnessing their growth and achievements.
