Wyndham Clark secured his third victory in 2026 at the BMW Championship, defeating Rory McIlroy. This win has reignited discussions about the PGA Tour Player of the Year award. For the first time in four years, the debate is active and engaging, challenging Scottie Scheffler’s longstanding reign.
Two key points stand in this debate: being the best golfer doesn’t automatically make one Player of the Year, and vice versa. Clark’s recent performances suggest he might end Scheffler’s four-year streak of taking this honor.
Clark vs. McIlroy at Bellerive
While Clark bested McIlroy at Bellerive Country Club, notable golfers Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau, and Michael La Sasso competed at LIV Golf Indianapolis, a non-major venue. La Sasso’s win over top LIV stars was a significant event.
This victory places Clark in the spotlight for the POY award. Though this title isn’t historically significant, it generates debate within the sports community. Clark and his partner, Emily Tanner, celebrated his win with the BMW Championship trophy at Bellerive Country Club.
Comparison with Scheffler
Scottie Scheffler is widely regarded as the best golfer, yet Clark’s achievements are challenging that perception. Scheffler’s 2026 highlights include two wins, multiple top-five finishes, but no major victories. Conversely, Clark’s accomplishments feature three wins and a major championship victory.
Although Scheffler’s performance is strong, Clark’s combination of victories and major wins likely edges him ahead. If Clark triumphs at the Tour Championship, he could cement his POY status, whereas a Scheffler victory could extend the debate.
The LIV Golf Scenario
Meanwhile, LIV Golf faces challenges. Its latest event in Indianapolis might mark the end of its current form. Michael La Sasso’s victory over Rahm and DeChambeau was notable yet lacked significant buzz. Despite ongoing investments, LIV Golf’s allure seems diminished, possibly due to various factors.
As LIV Golf navigates uncertainties, interest in how the league and its players adapt remains strong. The circumstances around LIV Golf indicate dwindling excitement, highlighting challenges in sustaining its momentum. The evolving golf landscape will undoubtedly continue to intrigue fans and players alike.
