Pilot’s Heroic Emergency Landing at Boca Raton Beach

On August 22, Boca Raton, Florida witnessed the remarkable survival of 23-year-old pilot Faith Tenkley. Her emergency landing in the Atlantic was captured in dramatic footage reviewed by ‘Fox & Friends’ hosts. Tenkley managed to guide her single-engine aircraft away from beachgoers and paddleboarders, swimming safely to shore. This calm handling earned praise from local authorities for her decision-making.

Tenkley, flying her family’s twin-engine Piper PA-30, encountered mechanical issues 15 miles west of Boca Raton. Planned to fly from Page Field, Fort Myers, Florida, to Bimini, Bahamas, she faced problems with the plane’s landing gear and right engine. Despite being cleared by air traffic control (ATC) for a runway landing, concerns over hard landing due to a potential malfunction prompted her to choose a water landing.

In a statement, Tenkley expressed her gratitude to responders, saying, “I want to extend my thanks to ATC for being prepared, as well as the lifeguards, firefighters, and police officers whose rapid response ensured everyone’s safety.” Her focus was strongly on ensuring safety for those around her, navigating towards open water to avoid buildings, swimmers, and individuals on the beach.

Video caught by a beachgoer showcased the aircraft as it descended low over the busy Boca Raton beach, executing a smooth water landing. A lifeguard rushed to assist Tenkley as she swam from the intact aircraft. Boca Raton Ocean Rescue fire boat soon arrived, taking her to a hospital for precautionary examination where no injuries were reported.

There was some initial confusion online where viewers misinterpreted the footage, thinking she was a surfer assisting a male pilot. She clarified to Gulf Coast News that she removed her long skirt over her bikini for the swim. Her professional approach throughout the incident reinforces her dedication and skill, honed over four years of flying.
