Wolf Blitzer Corrects Statement on Mail-In Voting Impact

CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer issued a clarification after incorrectly suggesting that U.S. military personnel stationed abroad would be affected by the Trump administration’s efforts to restrict mail-in voting. The discussion took place on ‘The Situation Room,’ where Blitzer interviewed Democratic Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger about a lawsuit challenging President Trump’s executive order aimed at reducing mail-in voting.

The lawsuit, filed by Virginia along with other states, resulted in a federal judge temporarily halting the executive order. Spanberger criticized the administration’s actions, claiming they were intended to discourage voting by making it seem less accessible and secure.

“The continued attacks that we’re seeing from the Trump administration is really just an effort to get people fearful, to get people to stay home, and, in many cases, to eliminate what is a valid, safe, secure way for people to be able to have their voices heard and to vote,” Spanberger said.

During the segment, Blitzer mentioned that military personnel in Virginia rely heavily on mail-in ballots. Spanberger acknowledged this and added that military, diplomatic, and intelligence service members overseas depend on mailed ballots to vote.

However, Blitzer later corrected the statement. At the end of Monday’s program, he clarified that these ballots are not influenced by the new Postal Service rules implementing the president’s executive order from March. He emphasized that military and overseas voters’ ballots fall under the Uniformed and Overseas Absentee Voting Act, which exempts them from these directives.

A CNN spokesperson referred to Blitzer’s on-air comments, providing no additional statement on the matter.
