Former Representative Kay Granger from Texas passed away at the age of 83. She was known for her pioneering role in breaking barriers for women in politics.

Granger achieved several firsts during her career. She became the first woman elected as mayor of Fort Worth, Texas. Additionally, she was the first Republican woman from Texas elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. Granger also made history as the first female Republican appropriations chair.

After serving in the U.S. House since 1997, Granger retired in January last year. Her retirement was due to health issues and extended absences from Washington.

Republican lawmakers have expressed their admiration for Granger. They remember her as a trailblazer for women in public service. According to House Speaker Mike Johnson, Granger dedicated her life to serving her community. Her roles included teacher, businesswoman, member of the Fort Worth Zoning Commission and City Council, and Chairwoman of the House Appropriations Committee. Throughout her career, Granger consistently paved the way for women in public service.
