The WNBA sparked attention on social media due to a now-deleted post from the league’s official account. The incident occurred before the game between the Atlanta Dream and Dallas Wings.

The post featured Paige Bueckers and Angel Reese seemingly engaging in a playful $400 bet on their match’s outcome. This appeared to contravene league policies.

Following the post’s removal, the WNBA issued a statement on Thursday through The Athletic. The statement clarified that while the post was meant to be lighthearted, players are reminded annually of rules against betting on WNBA games.

“While the social media post was intended to be lighthearted, WNBA players are well aware of the league’s policies prohibiting betting on WNBA games and receive training every year reinforcing those policies. We recognized that the post missed the mark, removed it shortly after it was published, and addressed the matter internally,” the statement read.

The statement continued, “We will also use this as an opportunity to reemphasize with the players involved that conversations about wagering on WNBA games, even when intended as a joke, can have negative consequences.”

On the court, the Dream narrowly defeated the Wings with an 82-81 score. Reese had a standout performance, achieving 22 points, 12 rebounds, four assists, and four steals. Bueckers contributed 16 points, six assists, and four rebounds.

Reese humorously commented postgame, “Yeah, I’ll be requesting my Apple Pay after this. Paige is a great player. To hold her to 16 points, it’s tough.”
