Williams Sisters Withdraw from Wimbledon Doubles Due to Injury

Serena and Venus Williams’ much-anticipated return to competitive tennis doubles at Wimbledon concluded before it began. The iconic sisters were forced to withdraw from the tournament due to an injury suffered by Serena. This was their first Grand Slam doubles appearance together in nearly four years.

Earlier in the week, Serena injured her knee during her singles return, which resulted in a three-set loss. Following this experience, the decision to withdraw from the doubles competition was made for her health.

In a heartfelt Instagram post, Serena expressed her disappointment about withdrawing. She mentioned the joy of competing again and the special opportunity to play with Venus. Despite her efforts, her knee was not ready for competition.

I’m heartbroken to have to withdraw from doubles. Coming back to compete again has been a gift, and the opportunity to play alongside @venuswilliams once more meant the world to me. I did everything I could but unfortunately my knee just isn’t ready to compete.

Serena shared an image of four syringes, indicating the fluid drained from her knee following her singles match. A video accompanying the post showed her walking with support around her knee, accompanied by one of her daughters holding a cane.

Despite this setback, Serena hinted at a possible return elsewhere with the upcoming U.S. Open. “All I can say,” Serena remarked, “is stay tuned to a city near you.

The sisters, scheduled to face Camila Osorio and Solana Sierra, postponed their opening round match to allow more recovery time for Serena. Unfortunately, this was not sufficient.

Serena’s recent match saw her lose 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-3 to 20-year-old Australian Maya Joint. The Williams sisters’ legacy includes six Wimbledon doubles championships, last winning in 2016. They had also teamed up in the 2022 U.S. Open, exiting in the first round.
