According to four law enforcement officials with knowledge of the case, one person is in critical condition. Officials believe one of the injured individuals is a suspect, though the status of the second person’s involvement remains unclear.

The U.S. Secret Service, after engaging with a suspect, fired shots, as reported by two senior officials. At this point, there are no reports of Secret Service agents sustaining injuries. The Secret Service posted on X, acknowledging reports of shots fired near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW and stated they are working to confirm details with ground personnel.

An NBC News team present at the White House heard between 20 and 30 gunshots at approximately 6:04 p.m., prompting Secret Service agents to instruct reporters gathered on the North Lawn to quickly move to the press briefing room. The lockdown included the whole White House grounds and was lifted at 6:46 p.m.

Outside the White House, armed Secret Service agents maintained a presence as the situation unfolded. FBI Director Kash Patel stated on X that the FBI is aiding the Secret Service in their response.

President Donald Trump was at the White House during this event. Vice President JD Vance was confirmed at the White House earlier in the day, though his status at the time of the incident remains unconfirmed. The U.S. Capitol Police have not responded to a request for details regarding the situation.
