Week 5 Highlights in High School Football Season

The regular season of high school football has passed its halfway mark. In Week 5, one of the three undefeated teams fell as Providence lost 17-7 to Nazareth. This game marked Providence’s first since the dismissal of head coach Tyler Plantz, a notable development from last week.

Meanwhile, Oak Lawn and Lincoln-Way East preserved their unbeaten records. Jayden Schlosser of the Spartans and Jayden Cawthon of the Griffins delivered outstanding performances for their respective teams. With the postseason on the horizon, let’s review the key takeaways from Week 5.

Teams Breaking Playoff Droughts

The expanded playoffs have created opportunities for teams that have missed the postseason in recent years. Leo, Bloom, and Thornton, all with 3-2 records, are on track to make the playoffs. This would be the first time since 2013 for Leo, 2017 for Bloom, and 2019 for Thornton.

Marian Catholic, standing at 2-3, is also close to a playoff spot. A win against St. Viator (0-5) could secure their first appearance since 2019. These teams are not just sneaking in with a late win in Week 9. They are close to securing positions early, showing potential for deeper runs.

Looking broadly, it seems all but eight teams from the Southland region are likely to make the playoffs. Teams such as De La Salle, Bremen, Eisenhower, Argo, and Thornridge face tough challenges.

Potential Contenders

Other teams are on the bubble. St. Laurence, at 1-4, requires strategic wins. A Week 7 victory over Marmion (2-3) may be crucial, potentially setting up a decisive match against DePaul Prep (3-2) in Week 9.

Rich Township, likewise 1-4, remains optimistic after a commanding 41-0 win over Bloom, thanks to a standout 295-yard, three-TD performance from Ortez Johnson. They aim for at least three wins.

Stagg, another 1-4 team, hasn’t reached playoffs since 2005. Their success hinges on a win against Thornridge Friday, though their final games present significant challenges. Without an upset, securing a playoff spot might be difficult.

For those teams not mentioned among the eight, a spot in the playoffs awaits.

The Race for the Bye Week

With many teams entering the playoffs, the focus shifts to securing a first-round bye. Achieving seven wins provides comfort for a bye, though some six-win teams with strong opponent records might qualify.

Lincoln-Way East (5-0), Oak Lawn (5-0), Mount Carmel (4-1), and Morgan Park (4-1) are in favorable positions. Teams like T.F. North (4-1) and Evergreen Park (4-1) also have solid chances.

However, the outlook for Providence (4-1), Lincoln-Way Central (4-1), Brother Rice (3-2), and Richards (3-2) is less certain. A few close games could significantly influence their postseason journeys.

Noteworthy Game Moment

One unexpected result was Hillcrest defeating Lemont 38-20. Hillcrest started the season 0-3 and struggled offensively early on. Yet, they have since rebounded, now 2-3. Senior Ladell Ross, initially a receiver, transitioned to quarterback successfully, contributing three TD passes in the game. The competition in the South Suburban Blue conference promises unpredictability this fall.
