A two-vehicle collision involving a Waymo vehicle near downtown Los Angeles resulted in multiple injuries on Sunday. The incident sent two individuals to the hospital, while several others sustained injuries, according to first responders.

The crash occurred at 5:45 a.m. near Venice Boulevard and Toberman Street in the Pico-Union neighborhood. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) has not confirmed the exact number of victims.

A spokesperson from the Los Angeles Fire Department stated that at least two people were transported to local hospitals. Additionally, at least one person received treatment at the scene and was released shortly after.

Photos from the accident site display debris and clothing scattered across the area. Initially, the accident was reported as an auto-pedestrian collision. The exact cause remains undetermined, with the LAPD continuing their investigation.

A Waymo spokesperson indicated that their vehicle was not responsible for the crash. According to the spokesperson, the Waymo car was driving east at 27 mph on Venice Boulevard. At that moment, a blue sedan traveling at 47-50 mph collided with a pedestrian outside a crosswalk. The sedan then swerved into the opposite lane, striking the Waymo vehicle.

Waymo’s spokesperson, Ethan Teicher, emphasized, “The safety of our riders and other road users is our top priority.” The company is collaborating with first responders and expressed gratitude for their swift response to the incident.
