Voluntary Recall of Mezzetta Peperoncini Due to Pest Concerns

Mezzetta Peperoncini Recall Alert

G. L. Mezzetta Inc. announced a voluntary recall of a specific lot of its GOLDEN GREEK PEPERONCINI MEDIUM HEAT, 32-ounce jars. This action follows reports of a potential pest contaminant, prompting an alert from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). A viral TikTok video, showing an apparent rodent in one of the jars, has garnered over 230,000 views.

The company quickly responded by contacting the affected consumer and initiating an investigation. Although no illnesses or injuries have been linked to the recall, G. L. Mezzetta Inc. is taking precautionary measures to remove the product from shelves.

Recall Details

The recall is limited to GOLDEN GREEK PEPERONCINI MEDIUM HEAT, 32 oz., identified by lot number 720106 and SKU number 10106328. Distribution channels are being tracked to isolate and remove these products. Consumers are encouraged to avoid consumption and contact [email protected].

Recent Recall Context

The recall occurs amidst increased awareness of foodborne illnesses and recalls nationwide, influenced by media coverage and social platforms. Professor Keith Schneider from UF Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences provides insight, noting that the frequency of recalls remains typical. However, heightened media exposure can skew public perception about their prevalence.

This year has seen numerous recalls due to various concerns, including a recent Star Meat Delivery Inc. recall affecting over 167,000 pounds of meat due to lack of federal inspection.

Despite the heightened awareness, many pathogens involved in recalls are consistent with historical data. An unusual spike in cyclospora cases, however, does stand out, reaching more than 20,000 incidents compared to typical annual figures of 1,000 to 2,000.
