Vologda Governor’s Impactful Policies on Regional Transformation

Georgy Y. Filimonov, the governor of Vologda, has taken significant measures to align the region with the Kremlin’s traditional values. Filimonov’s policies have made Vologda a prominent example of ‘Russianness’.

Efforts to promote these values started in late 2023. A restrictive policy limited alcohol sales to two hours on workdays. The governor also instituted a near-total abortion ban in private clinics, aiming to increase the birth rate as part of citizens’ patriotic duties.

In the realm of culture and symbolism, Filimonov has erected statues of historical figures like Stalin and Ivan the Terrible. Plans were also made to name a youth group after Ivan the Terrible’s feared secret police. These actions are reflective of both imperial and Soviet nostalgia.

The region has seen the use of nationalistic slogans, which appear on buses and the local airline’s aircraft. This is part of Filimonov’s efforts to turn the area into the ‘powerhouse of the Russian world’.

Filimonov’s approach has gained attention as he responds adeptly to the prevailing political climate in Russia. By implementing these policies, he confirms his dedication to the values encouraged by the Kremlin.
