A recent video capturing a diplomatic exchange between Israeli and Iranian representatives at the United Nations has gained significant attention on social media. The video shows Israel’s U.N. ambassador offering a Starlink device to an Iranian delegate.
This video has amassed approximately 9 million views across various platforms. Notably, nearly 40% of its Instagram viewers are located in Iran, according to analytics shared with Fox News Digital. A spokesperson for Israeli Ambassador to the U.N. Danny Danon expressed surprise at the video’s reach within Iran. Such an audience is considered uncommon for Israeli diplomatic content.
We couldn’t imagine being this popular,” the representative remarked regarding the video’s impact in Iran.
The interaction resulted from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s address to the U.N. General Assembly. During his speech, Netanyahu unveiled a Starlink device, directing a message to the Iranian populace. Post-speech, Netanyahu instructed for the device to be offered to the Iranian delegation. Ambassador Danon approached an Iranian representative with the device, but it was declined.
Ambassador Danon subsequently shared the encounter on social media, where the video rapidly gained traction. Analytics reveal that 39.9% of the Instagram audience viewing the video is from Iran, the largest demographic share. Audiences from the U.S., Israel, Canada, and Germany followed suit.
Danon’s office regards the substantial Iranian viewership as noteworthy due to the message of freedom accompanying the Starlink offer. This message was aimed at advocating for the freedom of expression for the Iranian people.
However, the spread of the video also coincided with another trend online. Iranian-associated accounts began recirculating a years-old video depicting former Israeli Ambassador to the U.N. Gilad Erdan being led away from the General Assembly during a protest against Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi.
This incident in the video dates back to September 2023. It involved Erdan holding a photograph of Mahsa Amini during Raisi’s speech. Misleading portrayals have emerged, presenting the old video as a current event involving Israel’s U.N. ambassador.
Danon’s office labeled the recirculation of the old video as a “disinformation campaign.” They believe it was orchestrated to counter the narrative surrounding Danon’s video.
From our perspective, the Danon video moved something in Iran,” a representative explained, claiming the Iranian regime aimed to “change the story.”
