Alexander Stubb, Finland’s President, emphasized that Finland is well-prepared to address potential threats from Russia, directly contradicting concerns expressed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy about Russia expanding its conflict beyond Ukraine.
In a dialogue with Fox News Digital during a diplomatic meeting at the United Nations General Assembly in New York City, Stubb praised former US President Donald Trump for diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the war in Ukraine. Stubb acknowledged Trump’s intensified focus in the past 18 months alongside negotiators such as Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
“I think we’re certainly in a better place than we were before President Trump started,” Stubb said.
Stubb has collaborated closely in diplomatic efforts, mainly behind the scenes, facilitating information exchange among Ukraine, the US, and European governments. He and Norway’s prime minister have been key figures in this diplomatic process.
During a week of comprehensive diplomatic discussions centered around Ukraine and Middle East conflicts, Trump, Zelenskyy, and Stubb were prominent figures engaging in negotiations.
Zelenskyy warned that Russia might initiate further aggression against European countries bordering Russia or Belarus. He advocated a proactive response from Europe and stressed the importance of retaliating swiftly to Russian provocations.
“If you don’t respond, Russians, they will go further,” Zelenskyy stated.
Stubb, however, expressed a calmer demeanor. He questioned the factual basis of Zelenskyy’s concerns relating to a Russian attack on other European nations, including Finland. Finland’s comprehensive preparation includes mandatory military service, substantial reservist forces, advanced military equipment, and civil defense infrastructures that contribute to national security.
Despite these preparations, Stubb acknowledged Russia’s broader campaign in Europe, consisting of cyberattacks and sabotage operations. He advocated for maintaining a composed response, reflecting Finland’s enduring preparedness against Russian threats.
“We are calm because we are prepared,” Stubb noted.
Finnish defense capabilities have been enhanced with the acquisition of 64 F-35A fighter jets, strengthening its deterrence against potential Russian aggression.
Finland’s NATO membership further solidifies its defensive position and discourages direct Russian military challenges. The country officially joined NATO on April 4, 2023, following Russia’s extensive invasion of Ukraine.
During his UN General Assembly address, Stubb urged continued support for Ukraine, emphasizing the coalition’s commitment to achieving a just and enduring peace in accordance with UN principles.
Stubb suggested Elon Musk extend Starlink coverage to facilitate Ukrainian operations targeting Russian missile sites. He underlined the interconnected nature of global security threats, highlighting alliances between Russia and Iran and stressing the urgency of resolving conflicts like those in Ukraine, Iran, and other global hotspots.
Trump, in his U.N. address, reiterated the need for preventing Iran from attaining nuclear capabilities and emphasized economic isolation of Tehran. For both Trump and Stubb, addressing the expansive scope of global conflicts is imperative, with diplomatic and military efforts crucial to achieving stability.
