This action was intended to encourage the group’s followers to return to the mainstream church. However, many of the faction’s followers have resisted this directive.

One prominent expression of dissent comes from Blandine Guillaumin, a teacher in France who works at a school operated by the faction. Despite the Vatican’s warning of excommunication for those loyal to the Society of St. Pius X, she remains steadfast in her commitment to the group. ‘It changes nothing,’ Ms. Guillaumin states, affirming her belief that the society represents ‘pure, authentic Catholicism,’ rather than the Vatican.

The conflict traces back to an ongoing dispute spanning over 56 years. The Society of St. Pius X was established in 1970 as a protest against the modernizing changes within the Roman Catholic Church following the Second Vatican Council held between 1962 and 1965. The society takes issue with the council’s decision to allow services in vernacular languages, continuing instead to celebrate the Traditional Latin Mass, which they believe maintains a sense of reverence and mystery inherent to the faith.

This recent schism underscores the enduring tensions between traditionalist practices and the Vatican’s efforts towards modernization. Followers in countries such as Argentina, Italy, and Switzerland have expressed their resolve to adhere to their beliefs despite the Vatican’s actions.
