The University of Southern California (USC) Trojans have suspended linebacker Desman Stephens for one game following a dangerous late hit on Oregon Ducks quarterback Dante Moore. This incident occurred during the second quarter of the Ducks’ 41-20 victory over the Trojans.
Moore was in the process of scrambling to secure a first down and was clearly preparing to slide when Stephens targeted Moore’s head. The impact resulted in Stephens being ejected from the game for targeting.
The actions last night are unacceptable and do not reflect USC Football or Desman’s character. He understands the mistake and accepts the consequences,USC head coach Lincoln Riley said.
In the immediate aftermath, Moore’s teammates reacted to the late hit, and Stephens momentarily celebrated before realizing the severity of the situation. Moore was stretchered off the field, prompting a statement from USC and Stephens himself.
Stephens expressed regret for his actions, apologizing for his inappropriate reaction and acknowledging the seriousness of Moore’s injury. I take full responsibility and am deeply sorry,
Stephens said, emphasizing that his actions did not represent USC.
Oregon head coach Dan Lanning condemned the hit as “disgusting.” Wide receiver Evan Stewart showed concern for his teammate as Moore was carted off the field.
USC announced the decision to suspend Stephens for the upcoming game against Washington. The Trojan community extended wishes for Moore’s full recovery and offered support to him and his family.
