Texas Christian University (TCU) has reversed its earlier decision and restored press credentials for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. This change comes after initially revoking them just before the football team’s season began.
The Horned Frogs played their season opener in Dublin, Ireland, facing the University of North Carolina Tar Heels. However, Star-Telegram’s TCU reporter, Steven Johnson, had to cover the game from the stands rather than the press box. The university had withdrawn the credentials following a report about a locker room altercation that led to the dismissal of senior safety Jacob Fields.
Former TCU safety Jacob Fields was charged with aggravated assault after the alleged incident.
Despite Amon G. Carter Stadium’s connection to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram—it bears the name of the newspaper’s founder and publisher—the university initially barred the paper. However, TCU has now decided to restore its relationship with the publication.
“Today, TCU Athletics fully restored media credentials to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram,” stated the athletic department. “In a series of productive discussions, we made clear our position and resolved to move forward. We respect their role as an independent news source and voice in our community, and we look forward to the season ahead.”
TCU lost the game in Ireland to UNC by a score of 15-10. The Horned Frogs will next play on September 12, hosting the Grambling State Tigers at home.
