Updates on Dodgers Players: Ohtani, Pages, Glasnow, Wrobleski, Díaz, and Smith

Shohei Ohtani’s Progress

Shohei Ohtani took a vital step toward his return as a two-way player. The Dodgers star, absent from the mound since July 3, engaged in live batting practice, throwing 30 pitches to catcher Will Smith. Ohtani had previously only participated in bullpen sessions.

“I didn’t have a check-in with Shohei, but everything from the coaches is really positive,” said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts.

Ohtani’s performance appeared close to his usual form, even sparking light-hearted exchanges with Smith, such as inducing an infield pop-up.

Another live batting session is likely before Ohtani’s potential return to the rotation. Roberts remarked:

“I think if it were up to Shohei, he’d be in a game in a few days. But I would assume another live BP. We will ensure we talk to him and coordinate with the training staff.”

Ohtani’s knee, previously affecting his pitching, no longer presents issues. Adjustments in his mechanics have alleviated pressure on his knee.

“That’s more of the pitching department,” Roberts stated, “but I do know that closing versus opening up the land a bit more relieved his knee.”

Andy Pages’ Injury and Potential Surgery

Dodgers center fielder Andy Pages sustained a fracture in his left hand after being hit by a 100-mph pitch from Bubba Chandler. Pages is considering surgery, though the recovery timeline remains around four weeks.

“I think they’re leaning towards surgery,” Roberts acknowledged. “But, like I told him, the season isn’t over for him. We expect him to return to full health.”

Tyler Glasnow’s Expected Return

Tyler Glasnow, who has been out since May 6, is scheduled to start against the Atlanta Braves without restrictions.

Justin Wrobleski and Edwin Díaz Updates

Justin Wrobleski, recovering from forearm inflammation, will be in the bullpen after a 15-day injury list stint.

“I see him slotting into relief. He will be a two-or-three-inning pitcher,” said Roberts.

As Edwin Díaz resumes his return from neck inflammation, he will initially pitch in less challenging situations to regain confidence before taking on closing duties again.

“It’s more about getting him healthy first and then gradually challenging him to regain trust in his pitching,” Roberts explained.

Will Smith’s Continued Improvement

Will Smith continues progressing, practicing batting with Ohtani. His performance indicates positive development.

“Getting Will in the batter’s box is good for both him and Ohtani. It’s exciting to see them compete,” Roberts remarked.
