Unauthorized Fireworks Cause Horse Stampede in Rome Ahead of National Celebration

Fireworks set off without permission in Rome led to a stampede of horses during a late-night rehearsal for Italy’s Republic Day parade. The incident caused injuries to both riders and animals.

This chaotic situation unfolded late on Friday near the historic Baths of Caracalla. Mounted units from Italy’s armed forces and law enforcement agencies were practicing for the June 2 national event when the disturbance occurred, according to Reuters.

Approximately 35 horses rushed through city streets due to the unexpected fireworks. Video footage showed many horses galloping along Via Cristoforo Colombo as people captured the scene on their cameras.

The recovery operation lasted until dawn the following day. The last horse was found about nine miles from where the incident began.

According to reports, the sudden loud noises started just before 11:30 p.m., causing panic among the ceremonial horses. Many were accompanied by Italy’s Army, Carabinieri paramilitary police, and state police.

While some riders were on horseback, others were leading the animals on foot. The startled horses broke free, as noted by the news outlet.

A 22-year-old soldier endured broken ribs and a punctured lung during the chaos. Officials confirmed his injuries were not life-threatening. At least 15 horses were hurt, but none needed to be euthanized.

Italian news source ANSA reported that three young soldiers from the Montebello Lancers and a 29-year-old policewoman sustained injuries during the stampede.

Authorities are investigating how the unauthorized fireworks were set off near the rehearsal area. Four traffic police officers were involved in the incident, reportedly being near the firecrackers when they exploded, as revealed by ANSA.

One officer allegedly ignited a batch of fireworks approximately 200 yards from the horses. This officer was identified as a 50-year-old who recently joined the force following an exam.

Local reports suggested the explosions and the horses’ escape occurred simultaneously, backed by video and witness testimonies.
