UEFA has reinforced its threat to boycott future men’s and women’s World Cups amid tensions with FIFA. This announcement follows Gianni Infantino, FIFA’s president, receiving unanimous support from FIFA’s leadership during a crisis meeting in Morocco.

The conflict arises from Infantino’s proposed FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) initiative. The proposal involved offering stakes in major football events, like the World Cups, for private investment. UEFA’s opposition to this plan remains firm despite Infantino’s apology during the Morocco meeting.

UEFA’s associations were very clear about the conditions attached to the non-participation in FIFA competitions, a UEFA spokesperson told The Athletic. First, the proposals to sell off the major competitions had to be withdrawn and secondly, assurances have to be made that such attempts to disfigure the game in this way will never be made again. These conditions have not been met.

UEFA further stated it has lost confidence in Infantino’s leadership, and that his support from those employed by him does not change their stance. Infantino, despite these challenges, holds strong support from within FIFA, vowing to protect its integrity.

While UEFA leads the opposition against the scrapped proposal, they are not alone. Concacaf and Conmebol have also expressed dissatisfaction. Conmebol highlighted their concern with decisions made without dialogue, emphasizing the need for respect and unity in global football governance.

The controversy continues as Infantino looks ahead to re-election in March. However, some associations, including the English Football Association and its Welsh and Serbian counterparts, have withdrawn their support.

FIFPro, the global players union, criticized the FFE proposal as an abuse of power. They emphasized the need for a legal engagement in decision-making processes involving significant changes, advocating for stakeholder voting rights within FIFA’s governance structure.
