Surveillance footage captures a chilling event involving a UC Berkeley student, who is seen racing through a locked gate as a homeless man allegedly pursued her last month. The man scaled the barrier, entered her apartment complex, and remains uncharged while officials deliberate.
The unsettling event occurred on September 15 outside an apartment complex in Berkeley, California, and was caught on security video. The video shows the woman entering the secured area at around 8 p.m. Shortly after, a man climbs over the locked gate, reportedly following her while holding what was initially thought to be a knife.
The Berkeley Police Department later identified the object as likely a barbecue lighter and confirmed no direct contact had occurred between the man and the woman.
Identified only as Eden for safety, the student reported walking her dog on Berkeley Way when the man approached her with unusual gestures before running toward her. Eden reached the secure complex and an elevator before he could see her destination.
I shut the gate behind me, heard him and saw him climbing the gate,Eden communicated to ABC7.
At approximately 8:04 p.m., Eden called the Berkeley Police Department, which was busy with other high-priority cases, including a domestic violence incident and a missing person report. Officers took about an hour to arrive and were unable to locate the man. The following night, officers received another report about the same man seen lying on a sidewalk near Berkeley Way and Walnut Street.
Upon arrival, police detained and identified the man, confirming his involvement in the alleged trespassing the previous night, but refrained from arresting him. California law generally restricts officers from making warrantless arrests for misdemeanors not witnessed firsthand.
Officials submitted the case to the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office. The office is tasked with deciding on any criminal charges. As of Monday, no charges have been filed, though the case remains under review.
Eden expressed her disbelief that such an incident could occur, urging for stronger laws and protections for residents.
Neither UC Berkeley nor the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office immediately responded to requests for comment.
