WASHINGTON (AP) — Two U.S. Army soldiers lost their lives in Jordan while countering Iranian ballistic missile and drone assaults. The Defense Department identified the soldiers on Monday as Tyler James Feehan, 25, from Ewa Beach, Hawaii, and Isabella Gonzales, 19, from Carrollton, Texas. These constitute the first direct casualties from Iranian attacks since the war’s inception.

Feehan, who served as a first lieutenant, is set to be posthumously promoted to captain and will receive the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and Combat Action Badge. Details regarding his commendations were not disclosed. Stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, he was affiliated with the 32nd Army Air and Missile Defense Command. Feehan was close to completing his Master of Business Administration at Southern Utah University, which plans to award his degree posthumously. University President Mindy Benson expressed condolences to his family, colleagues, classmates, and friends, all mourning the loss.

Gonzales was part of the 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command in Ansbach, Germany, and graduated last year from Hebron High School in Carrollton, close to Dallas. The Lewisville Independent School District acknowledged her service, emphasizing her character as reflected in her post-graduation decision to serve. Gonzales died on Friday, followed by Feehan’s demise a day later. Specific circumstances around their deaths were not provided.

In the same attacks, a third service member went missing. Unidentified remains are being examined, as stated by U.S. Central Command. The war with Iran has resulted in 17 American service member fatalities thus far.

The deadly incidents highlight the complex risks faced by U.S. forces stationed across the Middle East, even without ground presence in Iran. As fighting escalates post-broken peace talks, Iran and allies have increasingly targeted nations harboring U.S. troops. President Donald Trump has defended the war as necessary to prevent Iran’s nuclear weapon development, amidst political pressure to bring the conflict to an end.

Shortly after the war began on February 28, Iran’s drone strike on a civilian port in Kuwait claimed the lives of six American soldiers from an Iowa-based supply unit. Subsequent incidents included the death of another soldier following injuries from an Iranian strike on Saudi Arabia’s Prince Sultan Air Base, and the crash of a KC-135 refueling aircraft in Iraq, resulting in six soldier fatalities. Recent events also included a Navy pilot’s death in a helicopter crash during an emergency landing in the Arabian Sea.
