They sought their first knockout stage win since 2002, following a loss to Turkey in the group stage. Meanwhile, Bosnia and Herzegovina aimed to upset the U.S. after advancing from Group B as a third-place team.
The U.S. secured a 2-0 victory, but the match had consequences. Star striker Folarin Balogun received a controversial red card. This card reduced the U.S. team to ten men for the last part of the match and ruled Balogun out of the upcoming match against Belgium on Monday.
