The father of a U.S. Marine killed in a hit-and-run accident involving an undocumented immigrant is speaking out following the third arrest of the suspect, who now faces deportation once more.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) apprehended Martin Martinez-Ballinas, a 38-year-old Mexican national, on July 22 after he served a federal prison sentence for illegal reentry into the United States. Federal officials note that this marks his third deportation attempt.
Martinez-Ballinas was originally convicted in connection with the 2017 accident in Maryland that claimed the life of 21-year-old U.S. Marine James Ray Walden III. The incident involved driving without a license or insurance, resulting in a fatal collision with Walden’s motorcycle.

After being deported in 2020, Martinez-Ballinas attempted to reenter the U.S. in Texas the following year. He received a 15-month prison sentence for his actions. Following his release and subsequent deportation in October 2022, authorities apprehended him in Maryland in December of the same year.
The Marine’s father, Walden, expressed distress over systemic failures. He recounted learning that Maryland officials were aware of Martinez-Ballinas’s undocumented status and multiple arrests between 2012 and 2017, yet released him each time.
Walden tenderly remembered his son as an accomplished Marine and talented intelligence analyst, whose potential was tragically cut short. Walden highlighted his son’s role in the Marine Corps and his promising future with the National Security Agency.
“My son was 21 years old, just embarking on his life journey,” said Walden. “He served in the Marine Corps, worked with Intel and the NSA. He was exceptionally skilled, lauded by his NSA boss as one of the finest analysts he had worked with.”
Walden passionately opposed efforts by certain Democratic leaders to abolish ICE, deeming it an “insane idea” that undermines law enforcement efforts to uphold immigration laws.
He conveyed a poignant message to politicians advocating for the agency’s dissolution, emphasizing the enduring pain and irreplaceable loss he endures. Walden urged vigilance to prevent such tragedies, as they can impact anyone unexpectedly.
“You’ll never understand the deep pain and soul-crushing loss unless it happens to you,” Walden expressed. “This tragedy isn’t just imaginable—it could happen to anyone, anywhere.”
Walden praised former President Donald Trump for prioritizing immigration enforcement, highlighting Trump’s promises and actions.
“Trump will be remembered as one of this country’s great presidents,” Walden stated. “He followed through on his commitments, aligning actions with words.”
