Two Shot Inside Chicago’s Mark Twain Elementary School

A man and a woman were both critically injured after a shooting inside Mark Twain Elementary School on Chicago’s Southwest Side. The incident occurred at 5134 S. Lotus Ave. in Garfield Ridge around 3:40 p.m., according to a police notification.

Chicago Public Schools officials have not responded to requests for comment. According to Trumaine Reeves, executive vice president of SEIU Local 73, the victims were custodians, but it is unclear if they are union members. Local 73 represents 13,000 support staff in CPS. Reeves expressed condolences, saying families are deeply impacted by the tragedy.

Chicago Lawn district police found a 48-year-old woman with a gunshot wound to the head and a 63-year-old man who appeared to have a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A gun was recovered at the scene. Both were transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in critical condition and later died.

The school grounds were blocked off by police tape, and at least 10 squad cars were present. Residents, including Kelly Carrillo, observed the situation from their homes. Carrillo mentioned that traffic began to build up in the area, followed by the arrival of ambulances and fire trucks. She described the scene as unsettling, especially with school set to start soon.

Wentworth Area detectives are leading the investigation.
