On March 9, 42-year-old Derek Jordan was killed after a police encounter turned deadly at 812 N. Homan Ave. Police attempted to stop a vehicle linked to an earlier shooting, leading the driver to flee. The attempt resulted in the vehicle hitting a pedestrian, a CTA bus, and an unmarked squad car. During the arrest attempt, an officer fired his weapon. A gun was later recovered from the vehicle.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is investigating the incident. A spokesperson confirmed that the investigation remains active, with no additional details shared.

Filed in Cook County circuit court, the lawsuit accuses the city and Officer Walzer of wanton and willful conduct. Attorney Antonio Romanucci, representing Jordan’s estate, stated, “We are seeking justice for Derek.” His family hopes for systemic change to prevent similar events.
COPA released footage from body cameras and nearby surveillance, highlighting the sequence of events. Jordan rammed a bus as police approached. Officer Walzer’s body camera captured him yelling threats before firing his weapon.

Officer Max Walzer has been with the police since February 2022. He faced four misconduct complaints, none sustained by COPA. Post-incident, Walzer was relieved of his police powers but later assigned to the Harrison District.

Christine Thompkins, Jordan’s mother and estate administrator, expressed her determination to seek justice. “I am sure my son was scared, but you said what you were gonna do. And you killed him,” she said. Derek Thompkins, Jordan’s father, questioned the actions of those sworn to serve and protect, saying, “Just tell me who they’re protecting, because it damn sure ain’t us. Where does this stop?”
The city’s law department stated it had not yet been served with the complaint and does not comment on ongoing litigation.
