President Donald Trump actively engaged in election contests this year, advocating for loyal supporters and dismissing those opposing him. It appears that Trump may continue to focus on Republicans critical of the MAGA movement before the significant midterm elections.
Trump’s Targets in Recent Elections
On Tuesday, Republican Representative Thomas Massie became Trump’s latest target. Massie lost his primary election to Ed Gallrein in Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District. Gallrein’s victory followed a contentious campaign marked by a public feud with Trump, who labeled Massie the “worst congressman in the Republican Party.” Massie had openly disagreed with Trump on foreign policy and other issues.
Prior to this, GOP Senator Bill Cassidy was defeated in a Republican primary in Louisiana, unable to advance to a runoff. Cassidy lost to Trump-backed candidate Julia Letlow. Cassidy’s vote to convict Trump after his impeachment post-January 6, 2021, Capitol riot was a noted factor.
Potential Future Targets
Following Massie’s loss, conservative voices began speculating on the next MAGA target. Activist Laura Loomer issued a warning to Kentucky Republican Senator Rand Paul, stating, “you’re next.” Paul shares political similarities with Massie and has a history of opposing Trump on major issues.
Paul has resisted Trump-backed foreign policies and spending measures, including voting with Democrats to limit US military actions in Iran. He also criticized Trump’s use of executive power on tariffs and emergency authorities, claiming they transcend constitutional constraints.
“I think if we step back and look at the Trump administration and Trump in history, the big debate will be over executive power,” Paul commented in an August 2025 podcast with Russell Brand.
Paul’s approach of challenging Trump’s agenda aligns with Massie’s perspective, potentially putting him at odds with MAGA supporters. However, he is safeguarded in the short term as he isn’t due for reelection until 2028, and he maintains a national profile from his presidential campaign.
Other Possible Targets
Colorado Representative Lauren Boebert, seen as a “MAGA warrior,” openly supported Massie before the Kentucky primary. She campaigned alongside him, yet maintained her allegiance to Trump.
Boebert expressed support, writing, “Below is my friend Thomas Massie. He loves America and is fighting to save it. Also below is my friend and President, Donald Trump. He’s put his life on the line to save this great country.”
In response, Trump threatened her with a primary challenge. He posted on Truth Social, calling for opposition against Boebert due to her support for Massie. Subsequently, Boebert acknowledged the President’s remark but reiterated her loyalty to the MAGA movement. Colorado’s congressional primaries occur on June 30, 2026, and currently, Boebert runs unopposed.
Victoria Spartz, a representative from Indiana, also aligned herself with Massie, praising his support for women’s rights. Despite not facing direct criticism from Trump, her association with Massie during a critical time might attract MAGA scrutiny. She secured the Republican primary on May 5 and advanced to the general election, allowing her some protection from immediate challenges.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune has encountered opposition from Trump several times over policy differences. Thune opposed Trump’s actions, including attempts to overturn the 2020 election. Despite their contentious relationship, Thune remains steadfast in expressing when he believes Trump errs. Though Thune is not on the ballot in 2026, his ongoing friction with Trump could perpetuate MAGA dissatisfaction.
