Trump Signs $70 Billion Homeland Security Bill Amid House Scrutiny

President Donald Trump has signed the $70 billion homeland security bill, supported by Republicans, after it faced close votes in the House due to the narrow GOP majority. Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump expressed his satisfaction in funding the Department of Homeland Security and providing necessary resources to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Border Patrol agents. He emphasized the importance of this funding for domestic law enforcement and efforts to combat child exploitation.

Trump criticized former President Joe Biden for an ‘open border policy’ that allowed millions of undocumented migrants to enter the U.S. He also targeted former Vice President Kamala Harris, the border czar, for not engaging with ICE and Border Patrol during her tenure.

According to Trump, incidents of fentanyl crossing the border have decreased significantly, attributing improvements to strict focus on land crossings.

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise emphasized the need for urgent action in response to growing security threats. Initially, conservatives resisted parts of the bill tied to Trump’s immigration executive orders, demanding more permanent legislative action.

All Senate Democrats, alongside Alaska Republican Lisa Murkowski, opposed the bill. They joined forces based on concerns ICE funding might encourage future unchecked federal actions. Yet, the GOP stressed the necessity of sustaining ICE and Customs and Border Protection as needed through Trump’s term.

Democratic figures, such as California Rep. Pete Aguilar, opposed the funding, describing it as an unnecessary financial commitment that could result in negative community impacts.

The funding deadline initially set for June 1 by Trump experienced delays due to intra-party disagreements about the ‘anti-weaponization fund.’ This fund caused concern around its potential use by individuals involved in past violent incidents, such as the events on Capitol Hill in January 2021.

Months earlier, Democrats had successfully halted the Department of Homeland Security over Trump’s immigration actions, yet significant impact was muted due to prior separate funding of ICE.
