President Donald Trump is confronting opposition from within his own party over the confirmation of Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche. This opposition comes from Republicans seeking specific concessions before agreeing to vote for Blanche.

After a delay in Blanche’s confirmation hearing, Trump responded on Truth Social, criticizing two Republican senators blocking the nomination: John Cornyn of Texas and Thom Tillis of North Carolina.

Trump took a firm stance, suggesting he might withdraw Blanche’s nomination until these senators leave office. He stated that Blanche is a highly qualified candidate, labeling him as potentially one of the greatest Attorney Generals.

According to Trump, Cornyn and Tillis, who previously supported other nominees like Merrick Garland, are now obstructing Blanche’s path. Trump expressed readiness to resubmit Blanche’s nomination once Cornyn and Tillis are out of office.

Despite Trump backing Attorney General Ken Paxton against Cornyn, Tillis retired voluntarily. Cornyn dismissed Trump’s threat, indicating that their demands concern terms in a lawsuit settlement involving Trump’s taxes.

Their resistance led to a delay in the confirmation hearing by Senate Judiciary Chair Chuck Grassley. Ongoing negotiations have yet to yield the desired modifications to a settlement deal and the termination of a $2 billion fund.

Trump’s strategy may see Blanche remain as acting attorney general, akin to Joe Biden’s decision with Julie Su in a similar role during his presidency. The possibility of a more receptive Senate next year remains uncertain, considering the electoral vulnerabilities of Republican seats.
