President Donald Trump has endorsed Jennifer Balkcom, a state representative in North Carolina, as the new Republican nominee for the state’s 11th Congressional District. Balkcom steps into the candidacy after the incumbent, Rep. Chuck Edwards, withdrew his re-election bid.
Trump shared his support through a post on Truth Social, expressing confidence in Balkcom as an ‘America First Patriot’ who will represent North Carolina well.
Balkcom responded to Trump on X, expressing gratitude for his endorsement. She emphasized her commitment to working for the people of Western North Carolina by rebuilding the region and delivering tangible results. Balkcom pledged to fight for more affordable living conditions for families in the area.
Previously, Trump had backed Edwards for re-election, who solidly won the March 3 Republican primary. However, on August 5, Edwards declared he would not run again, following recommendations from a House Ethics Report.
The report from the House Committee on Ethics suggested censure for Edwards due to unprofessional and inappropriate behavior towards female staff members. It highlighted issues such as gifts, comments on appearance, and invitations for personal engagements as concerns.
Despite Edwards denying any sexual or romantic intentions, the report indicated that a reasonable observer might interpret his actions differently.
