Trump Advocates for Permanent Daylight Saving Time

On August 13, 2026, President Donald Trump called on Congress to pass the Sunshine Protection Act, claiming it could contribute to reducing murder and robbery rates. Since World War One, the United States has practiced moving clocks forward during warmer months, known as Daylight Saving Time (DST), to extend daylight into the evening. As autumn arrives, clocks are set back an hour to return to standard time.

The legislation successfully passed in the House in mid-July, receiving support from 308 lawmakers, while 117 opposed it. Now under Senate consideration, the president expresses eagerness to sign the act into law.

“For many years, the vast Majority of Americans have asked to make Daylight Saving Time permanent, but no Administration has been able to get it properly done, until now,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “I am proud to announce that the House of Representatives has passed the Bill, and it has now gone to the Senate for final approval.”

Trump stated that studies from medical, crime, and economic fields indicate ending the biannual time change could bring various benefits. These include reducing robbery and murder rates, decreasing car accidents, particularly those involving pedestrians, and lowering risks for cardiac issues, stroke, and seasonal depression.

The president continued, saying it would ensure safer conditions for children walking home from school, provide increased family time, and bolster extracurricular activities. Moreover, he highlighted potential boosts to sports, fitness, tourism, retail, and restaurant industries, along with saving money on energy bills, all due to an additional hour of daylight.

He emphasized, “Leave it as it is now, and never change again. This is an issue that Republicans, Democrats, and Independents can unite behind. I am asking Republican Senators to PASS THE SUNSHINE PROTECTION ACT, ASAP.”

The story is still developing and updates are anticipated.
